“El origen de mis ideas está en mis reacciones ante el sonido. Creo que es el sonido lo que dispara mi imaginación. Me pasé toda mi infancia junto a los altavoces, con los ojos cerrados, escuchando música mientras imaginaba cosas, así que tengo una biblioteca mental de conexiones entre imágenes y sonidos”.
Video- artista de talla mundial nacido en 1971 en la capital británica. Empezó en 1985 haciendo videos para la banda IDM Autechre (uno de los trabajos más importantes con la banda fue el video para Second Bad Vilbel del año 96)
Siempre lejano del mainstream (dejando en claro que su único acercamiento a el fue con Madonna en “Frozen” el año 98) hizo vínculos con el video arte, el que le entregó suficiente libertad para dar rienda a la experimentación que mezcla horror , parodia y porno como vemos en casi todos sus trabajos, como por ejemplo: “Come to Daddy” con los niños demoníacos “ sueltos” por Londres y en la video instalación “ Flex” en donde una pareja se enfrenta con su propia carne entre pasividad y violencia entre luz y tinieblas , ambos musicalizados por Aphex Twin.
Uno de los aspectos que llama más la atención es como Cunningham nos presenta el cuerpo en pantalla. Muestra un ser inmerso en paisajes urbanos densos, depresivos, de colores fríos y apocalípticos que siempre está mutando no sin dolor. Cuerpos imperfectos que se agrietan, se cortan, se mezclan, se deforman para pasar a ser otro.
Premiado muchas veces como lo fue en el 2000 por el video de amor cuasi-humano “All is full of love” de Bjork, muchos esperan más logros y esta vez de la mano del cine, pero por ahora no hay nada claro acerca de esa incursión, aunque por un momento mucha gente creyó que sería el director de “ Neuromante” de William Gibson, famoso escritor de novelas cyberpunk… pero sólo fue un rumor.
En el año 2003 se editó el dvd que formó parte de una serie de trabajos de otros artistas “The work of director, Chris Cunningham” que recopila videoclips, comerciales de tv y cortometrajes y que por lo menos en Chile no es difícil de conseguir.
Nuestro amigo tiene el privilegio además de haber sido el creador de uno de los videos más chocantes que me ha tocado ver, no por algo fue elegido el video más extraño de todos los tiempos ( el segundo puesto se lo lleva “Windowlicker” tambiçen de Cunningham, el tercero “ Closer de NIN y el cuarto lugar “ Smack my bitch up” de The Prodigy).El corto en cuestión es “Rubber Johnny” que nació siendo la prolongación de un comercial que el año 2001 Cunningham había filmado para Druqs, uno de los tantos discos de Aphex Twin, para luego convertirse en corto, el que fue lanzado en dvd el año 2005 por Warp Films con un libro de fotografías.
La historia es acerca de Johnny (interpretado por el propio director) grabado siempre con cámara , un chico deforme aislado en una habitación subterránea junto a su perro que se divierte con sus constantes cambios de cuerpo mientras baila en su silla y jala… si jala (sic).
